92 190E 2.6 Alternator Removal

I need instructions on removal of the alternator from my 1992 Mercedes 190E 2.6. I want to remove it and have it rebuilt. What all should I have replaced on the alternator?
Do I need and special tools to remove the alternator?
Thanks, Larry Don

I'm curious. Why do you want to rebuild it?

If you feel it's not putting out enough, it may simply need brushes(volt. reg). Bottom side of alt. 2 phillips screws. Out they come - out comes the VR. Slip in a new one - reinstall 2 screws. Takes longer to setup for it than it does to do it. If the commutator ring is badly worn, this may not buy you much.

You'll need to loosen a 19mm bolt under one of the pulleys near the power steering pulley. The fan clutch has an 8mm allen bolt in the center that must be loosened to get the fan off. There's a hole in the back of a hub in front of this that you slip a counter tool into so the 8mm will loosen. Not the best of instructions - much has been written here about it.

As for what to request from the elect. rebuilder, you simply say you think it's kaput and they'll go thru it. A good rebuilder will thoroughly test and replace as needed.
