97 C230 - Transmission fluid change

I'm about to embark on a transmission fluid / tranny filter change on my 97 C230. It's reached 70K miles and I figure it's past due ... Have done a tranny fluid/filter / adjusted "the bands" on a 99 Durango..

Haynes Manual dosen't have anything on doing a tranny fluid/filter change except says > take it to a Benz shop..

Any advise, pointers , techniques??

thanks

The main issue is that the fluid temp must be at exactly 80C for the fluid level to be correct. The SDS system allows the temp to be monitored. The 722.6 is very sensitive to fluid level, so be careful.

roger the fluid temp..

How did you change the fluid?/
unbolt the tranny pan > detatch the tranny filter > install new tranny gasget > refill fluid??

It should be easy as Kim said, except that I believe your model will have a drain for the torque converter. You just have to rotate the torque converter until you see the drain plug - same size as the pan drain plug. Drain both at the same time before refilling. When refilling, pour in four quarts, start the engine, let it idle, then pour in the remaining charge.

I just finished doing my 97 S500 Coupe. I used a lift at the hobby shop which was great. The process is very simple, but you need a few tools. I used the shop dipstick to check the hot & cold level of the ATF before I drained it. I also measured all the fluid that I drained from the pan and the converter (plastic pitcher from the $ store). I removed 8 liters exactly, and that is what I replaced. Checked it with the dipstick and was good to go! I also got a 27mm socket to turn the crank and a #30 Torx to remove the pan.

Cheers,
Steve
