tranny removal question?

Is it easier to remove automatic tranny with torque converter or not. I have been trying to remove the tranny without the converter but it just wont uncouple now I'm wondering if it may be easier to remove with the torwue converter in helping the tranny loosen up from the motor

In my opinion, it is easier to remove the torque converter with the tranny. It should not really be that hard to pull the tranny back. You got all of the fasteners out? I'm assuming the engine/tranny is still in the car? If it is not then it should be REAL easy to pull the tranny back from the engine.

Yes, I forgot to mention that the motor and tranny are still in the car. I am thinking that undoing the bolts that attach to the flywheel and then pulling the whole thing back, it will be heavier.

By all means remove the fasteners that attach the torque converter to the flywheel. You should be able to rotate the engine to get the drain plug of the torque converter on the bottom allowing you to drain it. Are you sure you have all the tranny to engine fasteners out? There are two at the top of the tranny. You have to tilt the engine/tranny down to be able to get to those.

Thanks Engatwork, I will recheck and try removing both together.

A little late, but here's my 2cents

On the 190e 2.6, I could not remove the transmission w/o the torque converter - not enough clearance @ the rear of the transmission.
