Vehicle history
Not really a mechanical-technical question, more of a history-technical question.
I need to find out about my car (1987 560 SEL) - I have the records from 1991 onwards. In January, 1991, the car was imported to Canada from the United States, where it has been since. I have all the records. But I would like to get the records from its original sale in the United States and it registration there. I was told by the prior owner that it came from California, originally, but I need documentation. CARFAX says nothing about the car (1987 to 1991), except subsequent to its importation to Canada. Here is the CarFax link: http://www.carfax.com/cfm/FSBO.cfm?report=CFX000008192898 If the car sells to a buyer from the US, then there is no duty if the prior US registration can be produced. Thanks for any help (maybe a DMV records-clerk is a member here?) By the way, when I Carfaxed this car, I bought the unlimited 30 day - so if you want your car checked, send me an email (limit to a few per day - I need a life outside of Mercedes) |
First, I would order the original "window sticker" from Mercedes. You need to provide the VIN and your current ownership papers. That will show you the original configuration and the port of entry when first sold and the "prep" center. Beyond that, Mercedes should also be able to provide you with dealer service records and recall, but obviously cannot provide information regarding service by independents. I recently had a print out of my '85 W201 from the dealer, to verify my qualifications for the 250KM badge.

Maybe call the California DMV? If your car was ever registered there, they should have some record of the VIN number.
Having said that, I'm not sure what loopholes/paperwork you'll have to go through with them to get results :) Neal |
