Cold weather problems!
Today my 83 300 td started and ran fine with the Zerostart heater it was 20*. I made it about 5 miles from my house and the fuel in the line gelled so the car stalled.. I cranked and cranked but no restart. I even got a jump start but no start. Now the glow plug light does not come on. I did not have time to check the relay fuse or test the glow plugs but does the relay fuse blow after a lot of cranking? Or could I have burned up a few glow plugs?? Thanks for any help! Thomas

Is the fuel gelling?
|
Is it winter fuel? Winter fuel should not gell at 20, I use Power Service in mine and so far no gelling, 9 degrees today.

No glow plug light
Yes, The fuel is gelling but that is not the problem now... The problem is the glow plug light is not working. It went out after cranking over and over without the motor running. I checked the fuses in the fues box and they are ok and I checked what I think is the glow plug relay fuse on the inside drivers side fender well that was good also. I will check the bulb in the dash cluster in the AM but could of I burnt up the relay or a few glow plugs from to much cranking?? I am in Atlanta Ga. I dont think we have winterized fuel here... Thanks for the help.. Thomas

Don't bother checking the glow plug light, it's not the lamp.
Also, the fuses in the fuse box are not used for GPs. Instead, check: The 80A strip fuse under the glow plug relay cap The resistance of each glow plug With a blown 80A fuse, you will have no glow plugs One (or more) bad GPs will cause the light to not light. Oh, by the way, please post only one thread at at time, and keep track of the answers, they're going to be similar. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=113293 Best Regards, Jim |
if you can't get the gelled fuel out I have had success with hooking up a portable heater blowing under the engine compartment to ungel the fuel. Before that I would dump about 3-4 gallons of kerosene in the tank to mix it up. And I had a tarp over the car to keep the heat in. good luck...
