Angry Starting Problems

I have a 1988 Mercedes 260E. Within the past six months I have replaced the battery twice. The last time I had the battery checked and it checked out to be fine. After jumping the car to start it, it runs fine. Regardless of how long I drive it, if I turn the ignition off, the car will not start again. I unhooked the battery while the car was running in order to check the alternator. All was fine there. Headlights came on, etc.. That told me the alternator was good. Where do I go from here to find the possible problem?
Thanks for any help.
