OK!! Had these questions in a previous post, just as the transition was made, got replys but cannot find the post so I will try again.
Mercedes recommends replacement of fuel lines?? Have not heard of this before and wonder if it is a real concern, nothing is leaking. They also recommend brake strut bushing replacement, and the motor mounts. Are these things that are done in a fairly easy manner, or would I be biting off more than I would want to chew?? Like the new format, and am impressed with the delivery of parts from the part shop. |

One of the guys at the office has a 1984 300D, and I recall him having all fuel lines replaced at one of the major services. I don't recall what the mileage was for sure (somewhere about 150,000 miles when he had it done), but it was recommended service. The diesel fuel begins to break down the rubber after time, and while they might not be leaking now, they very well may be soon.
You didn't state which car, but I'm assuming it is the 300SDL.

Fuel line replacement
It is a SDL, and the recommendation comes from the last Mercedes shop visit by the previous owner. However I have had diesels in one form or fashion almost my entire driving life and had never had that recommended. The car has 231K at this time.

I can understand why they say replace them. I think that they are referring to the rubber lines that are covered with fabric. These lines run in between each injector. I was working on my car and I bumped one and it snapped like glass. As far as I know the metal lines do not need replacing.

There are metal lines to the injectors, perhaps it was done and not noted. No one has mentioned the do's or do nots of the motor mounts or brake strut bushings. I think I can find the motor mounts.

THE MOTOR MOUNTS ARE INEXPENSIVE ( ABOUT 12.00)
ALSO REPLACE THE ENGINE SHOCKS (2) AND THEIR BUSHINGS - KITS ARE AVAIL FOR THE BUSHINGS. YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT THE SMOOTH IDLE

I think CJ is correct. There are metal lines to the injectors, but there is also the "bypass" line that goes from injector to injector which is fabric coated rubber and just slips over a nipple. These do deteriorate and will then leak raw diesel fuel. It is very easy and very cheap (less than $5) to get the hose, cut it, and put it on in about 5 minutes. Don't forget to get the rubber plug that goes aver the very last injector. I keep a few sections of this hose in my glove box at all times.
