1975 450SL fuel pump relay
My 1975 450 SL wouldn't start. I was not getting the familar buzz when I tried to start it and with the help of folks here on Shopforum we narrowed it down to the fuel pump relay. I ordered the relay from Phil and was going to install it this morning. What I found (right above the fuse panel) was two banks of three relays with a type of bracket over those with one more on the bracket. There was another larger relay tucked up next to the fire wall and another one closer to the dash. The relay that Phil sent is much larger than the seven grouped together. Can anyone tell me which relay is the fuel pump relay? I have been trying to chase it down on a wiring diagram out of a Chilton book without much success. I hate to just start plugging it in each locaton hoping to get the right one, without damaging something else.

1975 450 SL fuel pump relay
Thanks Peter. That is the one I was guessing, however the new one is so much bigger it doesn't appear it will fit there. I will give it a shot and maybe move things as needed to get the new one to fit right.
Thanks Doug |

If I recall the early pump relay is similar to other relays. If this is the case you might have the wrong relay and it won't work. Best check the wiring diagram and verify whether it is a simple five pin relay.

1975 450SL fuel pump relay
Thanks Steve. I think I had better have Phil, at Fastlane, double check the part number I got against the part number on the orginal relay. I took the old one out, it is a five pin as you mention, and the new one I got is a six pin and at least twice the size of the orginal one. The new one will not quite fit in the same spot without some changes.
