New shocks, need dust boots?

Oh great and knowledgeable ones . . .

I replaced the rear shocks on my 79 240d with Bilsteins (+ springs, but that is a long story). The old shocks had the piston on top and a dust boot. The new shock had the piston on the bottom and no dust boot. Doest this sound ok? Do I need a dust boot? The old boots were too shot to think about removing and swapping.

Many thanks!

When the reservoir for the shocks are on the top you do need boots to keep dirt from getting into the seal on the piston. But if the reservoir is on the top you shouldnt need to worry about dirt build-up on the seal area as it will fall downward.

The reservoir on the Bilsteins is on the bottom. :(

Mine also have no boots.
