2001 S55 AMG questions

Hello,

1. How have the the electronics held up on the 01 S55 AMG? What usually needs to be replaced?

2. How has the transmission held up? What needs to be replaced and how often? Does it have lifetime fluid?

3. How has the engine held up? What things need to be replaced and how often?

thanks

1) The electrics don't give any regular faults on this model. Just a few random things which you'd get on any other car. Things to watch out for though are flat batterys, airmatic pumps that keep running/run very often/noisy, intercooler circulation pump relays jamming on which burn out the pump.

2) The autos are very good, they are fill for life oil so servicing isn't required. I would suggest that you do get the oil and filter replaced every 120,000km/70,000mi though as it's alot cheaper than a rebuilt auto.

3) engines are also strong but do require air filter and supercharger drive belt replacement every 2 years/60,000km/40,000mi). Spark plugs are expensive to do every 4 years (16 iridium/platnum plugs). you may encounter a misfire which is usually a ignition lead. For the performance they give they aren't that expensive to run.

On W220's watchout for front lower ball joint noises (4 Lower ball joints on these models)

Air filters only need replacing every 40,000 miles?

Are 01 S55 AMGs supercharged?

thanks

There are 2 55AMG engines. A supercharged version and a non supercharged version. I didn't think the non supercharged version was offered in the W220/S Class (I've never seen a S55 non supercharged). I may be wrong though.

There are indeed two versions of the s55 amg. 2001 and 2002 models have naturally aspirated 5.5 litre v8s producing and the 2003 up version which is supercharged and produces 493 bhp. I cant find the specs on the 2001 and 2002 models but am willing to bet money it's like 349bhp. Here is a link to an 2002 for sale http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4524445369&category=6336
