How to replace alternator on 92 mod 300 ce w124?
My alternator went bad yesterday.
New one is ordered(pick up today)and my mecanick is out of town until Tuesday. I guess i have to do it myself. Is it bolt on?where do i adjust the belt???etc Any info would be helpful. Thank you. Ray : |
Disconnect the battery negative terminal, draw a diagram of the belt so you can put it back the way it is suppose to be, when looking at the engine from the front look just to the right of the thermostat housing and there is an adjustment to the belt tenisioner, loosen it, remove the belt, inspect the belt while it is off for possible replacement, unblolt the alternator, remove the connections and get an exact replacement, reverese the procedure and install, lastly re-hook up the battery.

Addendum to previous post. Alternator is fastened onto bracket by BIG 19mm bolt. Not a lot of room and mucho torque to remove...expect skinned knuckles...
Also, replacement usually arrives w/o pulley...so you have to remove the existing pulley from the old alternator and fit it onto the new one. Takes an impact wrench to do it...I had a local shop do this for me N/C! I found I could replace the belt w/o messing with the tensioner. Removing the radiator shroud and the three bolts that hold the fan onto the clutch gave me plenty of room to get the old belt off and put the new one on. The wide belt makes this much easier than the old V-belt days. |
