560sel power steeing noise

87 560 sel

I have read in some places that ATF is incompatible with the PS pumps that MB uses in the 126 cars. I can only assume that the red liquid inside my PS reservoir is ATF and the pump is a bit noisy, especially while turning...

Has anyone else had this problem? How can it be corrected? Does draining the ATF and replacing with PS fluid solve this, or does the whole system need to be flushed? Would this have damaged the pump? Is there a filter in the circuit?

Thanks

ATLD

The PS pump on my SDL was making noise on cold mornings. I was running Febi fluid at the time, it is pretty thick. I bought some of the official MB stuff and changed it, no more noise.

Don't forget their is a filter too.

The MB stuff is redish and kind of thin.

Right off Fastlane.

In my 86 300E it is in the bottom of the reservoir. When you unscrew the top and take off the lid, then remove the post, it's underneath at the bottom of the reservoir under the fluid. just pull it up with a hook or a screwdriver.

Thanks; then this is very similar to the PS setup that the e23 BMWs use with the ZF pumps. I'll replace fluid and change the filter ASAP with MB stuff and see if it makes a difference.

Regards,

Adam

It is in the bottom of the reservoir, you will see it.

A small nut holds a white plastic thing down. Unscrew the nut and remove the plastic thing and spring, the filter it under their. A tool with a small hook on the end seems to work the best to yank the old filter out.
