Steering wheel covers? Any recomendations?
 

My wheel is all beat up. I'm an original owner of a 98 CLK 320 and the harsh Miami sun has chewed up my wheel pretty bad. My attempt to get a wheel on Ebay has failed me 3 times thus far. I have so many wheels that are either the wrong color or that won't fit my airbag it's not even funny. So I've decided to go with a cover. Anyone else ever put on one of these wheel covers? I'm thinking of going with a wheelskin. Has anyone used them before? Many thanks

I've used the Wheelskin brand. They seem as nice as you could want, solid leather, easily cleaned. It will take a little stitching, but the kit contains the needle and thread. If you have to take the cover off any time in the future, you can always get similar sturdy thread from Tandy Leather to put it back on.

I have a sand-colored one I removed from my W123 after a brief time (the wheel cover was fine, but I traded the car) and it has the needles and extra thread. It might be too big for your CLK's wheel, though. If you're interested let me know.

As far as the harsh sun, I agree; I live in New Orleans. My advice is to get a reflecting sunshade for the windshield/dash (and another one for the rear window, if you leave the car parked in the sun all day). Keeps the interior cooler and protects your interior.

If your wheel is dark brown I have a wheel in great condition.

I put a Wheelskins cover on my old 124's wheel which had the Southern California syndrome (hard and rough with pieces flaking off). It worked really well. Putting it on is not hard, just tedious. Get the stitching VERY tight and even and it will look pretty much like it came that way. I like it a lot for the price. It's certainly easier than trying to find a newer junkyard used wheel in good shape, then hassling with the airbag to swap them.

Does WheelSkins carry a 2 color wheel cover that matches a palomino interior? Anyone have this on their palomino interior?

Two-tone Wheelskins

You're probably not going to get an exact match, but I think a two-tone sand/tan cover would blend in nicely with Palomino. Maybe sand/black or tan/black if there is some black plastic on the dash to coordinate with. (I don't really know what a CLK's interior looks like.)

Looks like you can request swatches of their leathers from them too, if you want to check the color compatibility beforehand.

Good prices. Also there is detailed instructions for doing a "baseball stitch", which looks much better. He'll supply the 2nd needle and thread at N/C.
