300TE dual fuel pumps design

Fuel pumps are very reliable today, so I'm wondering why this & other models have two instead of one. It can't be a volume issue either. My '80 280TE has a single pump needing higher flow then a newer car would need with 190km & still going strong.

I would assume it's for redundancy.
