The strangest thing happened today - was cranking my 300E, didn't start on the first try (as usual), so I turned the key to crank it again. On the second try, I got no response from the engine (tach didn't move, car didn't move), but there was a loud screeching sound from under the hood. Took a moment to pause and reflect on what just happened, and then cranked it again, and it started fine.
Any ideas what in the world happened to my car today? thanks, anthony |
Could be the Bendix drive in the starter. Have heard this before. Otherwise a belt noise or some small animal getting uncomfortable..:D

So I guess it might be a sign that the starter is going south? Any precautions (or repairs) that can be done before a complete replacement?
thanks, anthony |
What happened is your starter's drive gear didn't make contact with the flywheel gear.
