1983 240d engine knock

I have found a 240d that has a knock.I have not heard it . Iwas told by the owner that his x-wife was driving it and it started making a knock so she parked it.Are there any common problems with this engine .Could it be a bad injector, or something else besides bearings.Sorry I do not have more info I have not looked at the car yet .If it is just bearings can you pull the crank and get the pistons out from the bottom or do you have to pull the head.If so do you have to replace head bolts.Any good places to get a rebuild kit from.I plan on running it on straight veggi oil.Can you turbo these engines.

Sounds are extremely difficult to diagnose without hearing, especially without any other supporting details, such as miles on car, general condition, etc. Some 'nailing' (injection knock) may sound like a bad bearing, or it could be a bad bearing. These engines are known to be quite reliable, as long as they are not mistreated, such as running them out of oil...

I suggest that you post this in the "Diesel Discussion" Forum (below "Tech Help") where a lot of 240D owners can see and answer this.

Again, check out Diesel Discussion, it's discussed quite a bit. A SEARCH will bring up hours of entertainment.

Well, you can, but you won't want to. The engine was not designed for the increase in horsepower, it will cost $$$$!, you will have to do a lot of engineering, there will be overheating and oil cooling issues, etc. Much easier to buy another model that already has a turbo engine designed by MB. My 300SDL has an I-6 turbodiesel that is rated at twice the horsepower of the 204D and will deliver 300,000 miles of durability from the factory. No fuss, no muss, but it's a larger body.

Swing by Diesel Discussion and say HI!

Best Regards,
Jim

I went and looked at it today it has 160,000 on it body is straight no rust interior is good no rips in the seats it has a sun roof alloy wheels.Under the hood looks very clean but the motor is locked up.Oil was full, coolant was below the top of the core in the radiator but it still has some in it if you squeeze the lower hose you can hear it.So I went ahead and bought it figured I could get the $250 back out of it if I find it will cost to much to fix.
