Painting Headers
 

I'm looking to paint my headers, the rust is really showing.
Any help? Does walmart or canadian tires have paint that are useable on headers?

In short: nothing that will last longer than a few days, a month at most.

You will need a very clean surface to begin with and will have to follow the steps recommended by the paint manufacturer. One that comes to mind is VHT. Pep Boys or Autozone should have it in a number of colors.

A motorcycle shop will have PJ1 Hi-Temp exhaust paint, probably in black but they may be able to order others from their suppliers.

If you pick up a copy of Hemmings Motor News from Barnes & Noble (magazine section) there will be a number of sources in the front section.

Hot Rod magazines will have sources for exhaust coating services, both external and internal. Both types will aid in heat dissipation and help in lowering temperatures, but more expensive then painting.

IF you want the "good looks" for more than 2-3 months then have them ceramic coated! I have some coated over 3 years that still look like new!

Yes, they have 'usable' paint, if you want it to last hours....I used a brush-on header coating from Eastwood on my streetrod manifolds, which are Corvette style cast iron, smoothed off. They still look good after 10 years. The pint can can also be spryed if you have the equipment.

Get the Eastwood high-temp coating. They have black, gray, stainless steel and silver finishes. I used the factory gray version. It will last forever if you prep the headers properly. A pint will last you most of a lifetime. Just mix up a little and spray it on with the PreVal disposable aerosol sprayers you can get at NAPA.

I put it on my old 230/8 and the exhaust still looks good after 20 years.. Probably could use a re-coat by now, but I am getting lazy...

I tried high heat grill paint... lasted a few weeks....

I second the vote for Eastwood paint. Follow the instructions for applying and curing and you should have to worry about it for years. Have done several and they were all good.

I bought a high temp header paint from griotsgarage.com. I sanded my rust spots and applied the paint to my header with a q-tip. 2 coats and they come out really nice.

Just a reminder that the Eastwood paint has a shelf life of 6 months or so, so you'll want to order just what you can use in that timeframe. Also, I'm not sure about the latest inane postal regulations for cross-border shipping of liquids or aerosols. You might want to check first or you'll liable to end up paying UPS an outrageous bunch of fees.... :mad:
