'87 300e Muffler ?
Hi,
I'm curious as i had my mufflers changed on my car recently and was told that the front and back were changed. I can see that the back one is new but where is the front muffler located? I'm assuming that the center unit that I see which was not changed is the cat. convert. Can someone out there verify? Thanks, TB |
there are three mufflers on my 87 300e, one just after the gearbox near the front flex disc, one under the rear seat area and the final box with the tailpipes.
I don't have a cat on mine so can't help with its location. it may or may not replace one of the mufflers, but i don't think so. I think its between the front muffler and the engine manifolds |

Thanks, this realy helps, especially the diagram. Looks like I need to ask them why they charged me for the front muffler when it doesn't look like it was changed. Then look for a new shop!

The other important questions to ask are:
1) Exactly what brand was used? 2) Did they install new rubber donut hangers? 3) Do they know that there is a very specific for-aft clearance spec for the rearmost muffler? Steve |
No one calls a cat a muffler, so advise you assume they changed middle and rear units and called the middle unit the front muffler.
|
Steve, what clearance spec do you mean for the rear muffler? I have to install a new one soon & I haven't heard of that before. Thanks.

It's in the manuals. I have the factory paper manuals.
It should be on the CD's. I'm out of town and have no access to the info. I'm fuzzy on this. Think it is between the hangar on the rear muffler and the bracket that the donuts hook to. Wish I could provide it for you. Steve |
Kent,
That's the problem. The invoice was for a front and rear muffler. I was under the car and could see that the rear was new but that the other muffler was not. I wasn't sure where the cat was so I wanted to verify before going back for my money. I'll have to ask about Steve's questions although they work on Mercedes as part of their "specialty" so I would hope that they know the clearance. Sounds like there could be an issue, what is the clearance suppose to be? Thanks! |
