Can the hood on my 280c go straight up or not? One at the junk yard had a thumb lever to get it to do that. My 280c is not obvious if it does this. There were answers for both possibilities.

NO!! As I first posted, the W114 hoods won't go vertical. Best thing to do is reinstall hood after engine removal. You don't have to bolt it on, but carefully sit it back into place until you are ready to clean engine compartment.
