Arrgghhh! Are the left and right tie rods interchangeable?
So I'm in the middle of doing a DIY article on replacing ball joints and tie rods (check it out: http://www.ryan-partners.com/ftp/root/Replacing_Ball_Joints.htm) and I just realized that I installed the right tie rod on the left side. Now, I thought they were color coded, opened the box and found the tie rod was green and took out the green one and presto. Until I got to the other side, opened the box and found it was green too! Now the car is apart and I need it for tomorrow and I don't want to put the old tie rod back in. So both new tie rods are green, but only one old tie rod was green. I checked the part numbers and they are different, but the tie rods are both green. The right one fit on the left side. Do I need to go back in and swap out the left side? Can I go ahead and stick the left sided tie rod in the right side?
Thanks! Robert

I too got a tie rod for an ML320 that was packaged properly as the right side, but was actually the left side, discovered once the package was opened. I can't remember the source, it was an eBay purchase.

AFAIK they come in either right hand or left hand threads. Does not matter for safety or performance but they are made that way for alignment purposes. good luck

Thanks for the response. I couldn't tell the difference between the two but I didn't examine the direction of the threads.
