Hi All,

I have an 89 300e that I have just replaced the alternator on. However I would like to replace the brushes on the old one. Is this a hard task? Can someone post the directions on how to complete this project. Also how much are the brushes and how many are there? Does Mercedesshop carry the brushes.

Regards,

Sam

Most people replace the brushes and internal voltage regulator as a unit. It is very simple with two "straight" screws holding it in from the rear.

If you want to replace the brushes remove the regulator. The brushes are soldered to it. If I remember correctly the Bosch # for brushes is 11 011. After unsoldering the brush wire, feed the new wire from new brush (there are two) through the tentioning spring and resolder. Be aware that the wire determines the usefull length of the brush travel. Solder it short enough to hold the brush far enough into its socket that it stays in place (this is absolutely necessary for reinstallation back into the alternator. But not so short its usefull life will be shortened.

Replace the voltage regulator and the brushes as a unit! It should be around $30 or less. Like Steve said, just remove two screws from the back of the alternator pull the regulator, put the new one in, screw it back in and your are done. Maybe a 5 minute job.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery before starting the replacement!
