Rear thrust arms.
Tight components in front, gear box overtightened or balljoints are common.

Are your tires adequately inflated?
Another common problem which can cause a "floaty" felling on 124s is rear subframe mounts needing replacement.

As SB mentions .. rear thrust arms
Easy test: Hold brake and give some gas in gear ...have someone watch for lateral movement of rear tire/axle..very common and easy fix.. |

A word to the wise for those thinking about buying an older e320. Fixing the suspension on ours cost $2600.00!! Kind of negated any "good deal" we thoought we found on e-bay!

Dont forget the toe adjustment arms in the rear, it's the skinny ones pointing forward/inwards in front of the rear hub.
Can be checked by raising the rear and pulling/pushing the front of the wheel in and out. Often you can feel if it's the rear or front of the car thats wiggles sideways when you drive it, what's your guess?
