Squeeky Front End (124 Chassis)

I read a thread here about a Squeek when steering or when the chassis moved up and down. I had tried to locate it but could not. The suggestion was to drill a small hole in the lower ball joint seal and inject some oil into the ball joint. I did that and the squeek immediately went away. So I will get the ball joint replaced. I would never have thought that the ball joint was capable of making so much noise. It was really loud. Thanks again to whomever posted that suggestion.

I recently did the ball joints myself and posted the story in the DIY section, http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W124BallJoint

Just curious, but can you let me know what the job ends up costing?

Amazingly complex job! I ain't gonna do it. When it starts to squeek again it is off to the shop. I have a guy here in San Antonio who does MBs' and he is very reasonable. I get enough busted knuckles rebuilding my 57 Chevy step side. But thanks for the info.

Hi ...Thanks for an awesome DIY on the removal of the ball joints..

I am having my ball joints replaced next weekand was quoted 3 hrs labor cost of $250... Had my tierods replace several months ago at $100 labor

That seems very reasonable for that job. I got a quote of about $460 just for the three tie rods from the MB dealer here in the Bay Area, CA.

Doing the DIY was a lot of fun, and getting feedback is also fun. I highly encourage it, even if just for selfish reasons...

Don't wait around. If it pops out of its socket (like mine did), it could be fatal.
