1996 S320 check engine light and loss of

power (horsepower that is). This issue occures only part of the time and causes the idle to be very rough. If I turn off the car and restart it it disapears for a short time. My mechanic says I need a coil or coils and it will cost about $700 does this make sense to anybody?
