problem with 500sel self leveling suspension
I took my car (1992 500sel) to the local mercedes dealership to have a leaky rear suspension line fixed. They fixed the leak and changed the self-levelling valve. Now they are telling me that the car is fixed but the self-levelling function is not working due to faulty rear shocks. This function was fine when I brought the vehicle in. Any ideas?

If I were you, I would take the car to a good independent mechanic and have them check the system out.
I am not an expert, but having own wagons for over 20 years, I have learned a few things about SLS systems. The rear shocks are the most expensive parts of the whole system. I would check first other possible causes for the system not to be working properly before just changing the shocks. If the system was functioning unproperly (sending too much pressure) causing the leaking lines and broken valve, it is very possible the shocks were also damaged. Once the shocks are damaged (heavy oil leaking a clear visible sign for failure) there is no option, new ones are the only way out ($$$!). |
Thank you very much for your advise A. Rosich.
