Engine temperature rises on re-starts...

Hello all,

My engine temperature gauge varies from 87 to 89 Celsius degrees on normal operating condition. However, after shutting the engined down, go for a gas refill for instance, and then re-start the car, I notice that the temp. gauge would show around 100-105 degree for few seconds, then go back to the normal range. Is this (heat soak?) normal? If not, is there anything that I could check?

Thanks in advance!
Frank.

I think it's normal...
When you take a hot engine that is being cooled by fans and moving coolant through the rad and stop cooling it in those ways... it heats up a bit before the lack of explosions inside alows the temp. to fall.

It's normal and common in hot weather.

Most of the components inside the engine are hotter than the coolant, so when you shut down the engine heat migrates to the coolant and it heats up because it is not circulating to carry the heat away.

Upon restart the engine should quickly cool as the hot coolant is pumped out of the engine and the colder coolant from the radiator is drawn in.
