Oh dear gpd.. NO!
hello, on my 1987 w124 300e... i removed the screw from the bottom of the shifter console wood and lifted up the wood. i then checked the window switch ( i wanted to see if something was stuck there.. its not going down... looks like i need a new one ) but thats not the big deal right now... i put it back, screw it back in, start up the car... and i get no audio!!! noo!!! i turn the volume up and nothing! move the the fader back and forth franticly and nothing has happened. i did not mess with any wires. i just moved the switch... radio turns on just fine and i can change the stations. but no audio at all from anywhere... i THInk i hear like a faint, very faint audio fromt he rear speaker but it doesn't seem like it.. ideas??? how much is the typical cost of reqiring the entire audio system? what about the entire car?

Your radio speakers go thru the speaker fader switch (radio to fader switch to speakers) and you must have pulled the connector off the fader switch. It can still appear connected and not be making contact. Pull the console and make sure the fader switch connection is tight. Check the radio before you reinstall the console wood.

Nothing to be scared of.
Lift the switch plate again. The rotory switch is the fader for the speakers. Just push the wire connector back onto the back of the switch.

ok fixed.. few..i was soooo scared! i was thinking i had to spend a good amount of money before my dad found out... the thing was that the wood was not pushed all the way down. i got a can of compressed air and took out all the junk that was in the there and pushed down hard and tightened the screw well... not too tight of course... thats not good. but onto a new project!!!
ok i want more light in the car... i can never see enough... first is the dome light.. i want to replace that lightbulb for something much more bright. and are the lights for the climate control and radio bulbs? if so, can i put in white ,brighter ones... instead of the orange?? i saw how its done for the gauges and don't want to do that yet...oh and the trunk light... that hasn't worked.. how do i check the light? which is it? i can't see it.. and i have to carry a flashlight in there to see what im grabbing... and it doesn't help that the flashlight is black.. quite embarassing at times. ideas? |

Don't know about the bulbs, but if you do find a brighter alternative, let me know. The lighting is marginal at best.

As to the original reason for taking apart the console, did you fix the window switch? The window switch usually gets full of dirt or crumbs or something. You can carefully take apart the window switches and clean them and make them as good as new.
Good luck, |

If it is your car then work on it and enjoy it. Or is it that if something breaks then HE has to fix it and gets upset. I know I've been there. If you want to continue to work on it ASK FIRST, here at the forum, and we will help you thru it. Bulbs. Check the rheostat and see if it Will working correctly. Dimming and brightening the lights. Second replace the bulbs with new ones, not brighter, newer. As bulbs wear out they deposit a film on the inside of the bulb causing it to produce less light. The illumination should be quite adequate with new bulbs. Now check here before removing the various dashes and consoles to replace all the bulbs. And ask you Dad before you do it. ![]() Dave, a Dad
