New 124 owner, need help
I just inhereted a 87 300d turbo and have a few issues. sorry about the long post....
1- The blower motor does not work in auto or high low settings (blower motor?) 2- The passenger side window and the right rear window do not work (same side of car) from neither the console nor the door switches 3- My left speakers are dead (front and rear), the right ones work but the fader is crackling every time I touch it (I think it's the fader myself). 4- Finally the sunroof is not working. My dad said the roof stayed open one day and he took it to the mechanic and was told there was some type of problem with the tracks and was able to close it manualy and hasn't messed with it. Now, about myself, I am a fairly seasoned mechanic but new to the european sedans of this caliber. I am not intimidated to tear into the car and have the cd's with schematics and such but would like to get a heads up from you experienced owners out there who have encountered similar troubles. Thanks in advanced for any help you can give -Juan :) |
Welcome.......
I've never had any trouble with windows and cannot direct you on that issue, nor can I help you with your speaker issue either, but I can tell you that sun roofs usually don't work, or don't work very well on these 124 cars. What I can help you with is engine and drive train mechanicals, but you haven't posted any questions regarding such so I can assume all there is well. However, there are several things you should be aware of regarding the 87 300 D. My advise for you would be to buy a book that was published a few years ago called "Mercedes-Benz E-Class Owner's Bible 1986-1995" you can find this book at any Barnes & Noble, or Boarders, or any book store for about $30 and learn all about the car you own. You will find important things you should be aware of about the 87 300D. Issues I'm referring to involve the aluminum head used on the OM603 diesel engine powering this car. Also, you can look into the archives here and find a lot of reading about your car. There is a diesel discussion forum here also. |
First of all, welcome to MercedesShop! You'll be glad you've come here.
Lots of folks here with expert advice. Eventually, most or all of your problems (with your car) can be solved here. (Go to the open discussion forum for help with personal problems)... Next, use the "search" feature. You have a common model of MB and many of us have been down the same path. Most likely, you will find that someone has already posted a solution to your problem(s). It sounds like you have some issues with the console. Has someone spilled some liquid on it before? You seem to be having problems with the switches on the right bank of the console... |
Thanks you for the reply's. I am a member of a chevelle forum and have learned TONS from other members, thanks again, I will buy that book tommorow and look into the left bank as you suggested. -Juan

Welcome aboard!
Get new switches for the windows, $18 each last time I looked (several years ago, probably more now) as this is the usual cause. Else probably broken wires in the rubber tube at the door. Motors almost never go bad. Get a new fader switch, they aren't the best design. You can try some contact cleaner to de-gunk it, but the effect will probably be temporary. The lift angles for the sunroof are broken. Do a search on "sunroof" -- I've described this a couple times. Not a terribly hard job, but plan on about $300 for parts and a day's work the first time. Get some sunroof past from Rusty at BuyMBParts, he sells a 2 oz tin rather than the 16 oz can MB sells for $60 -- you really do need it (nothing else works properly to lube the sunroof rails) and you won't use the 2 oz tin, let alone the big can, in a lifetime. Change your oil religiously. I recommend Mobil 1, or any other full synthetic oil, 6000 mile intervals. Great car, I love mine! Peter |
Thanks a bunch. I am going to tear into the center console tonight to take a look at the wiring and switches, heres the thing though, they already tried switching the switches. All the left ones are on the right side and they still work great on the left but not the right. I will inspect the wiring in the door jambs as well. Thanks for you help -Juan
