c280 rear brake pads replacement
 

Plan to replace rear brake pads on our 97 C280.

I have replaced front pads before but not the rear ones.

Can the the rear brake pads be replaced with parking brake engaged?

Reason being I would like to do it one wheel up in air at a time with rear wheels locked so I could avoid putting all 4 on jack stands.

The rear pads should be the same as the front, just smaller. You can have your parking brake engaged while replacing, however be sure to put a block at both sides of each front tire and be very careful doing it on a level surface and using jack stands. Do not jack the car up anywhere except the jack points as it can damage or bend your suspension components. Do not ever get under the car. I just compress the caliper with a c-clamp (pads in place) remove the pins and pull out the pads. Then you insert the new pads and re-install the pins and sensors! Very easy job! Good luck! (be sure to use MB pads or the high quality ones from tire-rack)

I just want to make sure locking the parking drum brake does not interfere with rear pads removal.

It should actually be easier than the floating front calipers in my car.

NEVER put all 4 wheels on jack stands - too dangerous! make sure you always have at least 2 wheels on the ground. i would rather disengage the park-brake and put blocks both in front and rear of each tyre on ground. i would also suggest that you open the cap brake fluid reservoir (to release a bit of bubbles when clamping the caliper piston) but make sure that the fluid does not overflow.

Thks - I am also leery of putting all 4 up on jack stands which are all I have access to for now. I used to have solid wood `stands' when working underneath,

Anyway - turned out the front pads were worn out and I replaced them whilst rear ones are still in good enough shape that I could afford to wait and not throwing out good pads.

I shall tackle the job in mid-summer.
