The evil side of carb cleaner (ruins seals)

A few weeks ago I posted a thread and DIY on isolating vacuum leaks by observing the O2 sensor while spraying small amounts of carb cleaner at suspect areas (http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/M103VacuumLeak). This technique worked very well, however I suspect that the carb cleaner actually ruined the injector seals and O rings. I would recommend using WD-40 instead.

When I first did the procedure I found only one leaking injector and repaired it. A couple weeks later I repeated the procedure and found that other five injectors were now leaking. I can only guess that this was caused by the carb cleaner. I tested the carb cleaner on a few substances and found that it will soften and dissolved cured silicone (RTV). So I just want to pass on a warning: be careful with the carb cleaner.

Smile Vacuum Leaks

Try using propane from an unlit hand torch; just bleed a little in the area of suspected vacuum leak.
Be careful. If you burn it down, it's all on you.
