Please provide feedback and tips on replacing the U gasket for the front timing cover at top on the M103 engine, 300E

A note on the 5mm hex key wrench:
My experience with the M103 in my R107 is that the fan has a different spacing between its blades. Hence you can get your hand from the engine side through a wide spacing and skrew the wrench from the front side of the fan. - Now, reading further, I find my comment in your description in step 2. So why did you mention the need of special tools for Allen bolts in the beginning? Step 1: I am not sure what you mean here (maybe because I am a non english speaker). However, what do you mean with head cover. Is this the camshaft cover? Overall, a great article with expressive pictures! I am collecting links to good articles (see http://www.thomconsulting.de/MB/mbtechnikverweise.htm and use an online translator) and will be happy to link to yours! I see you recommended using Hylomar on the gasket surfaces. MB instructions say to not put any sealant except on the corners. Is the jury still out on this? I used silicone grease lubricant because I don't believe in installing (sliding) seals in the dry condition. Otherwise, I used nothing else on the seal when I did my engine.
There must be a reason MB decided to use a gasket instead of RTV sealant. Maybe they couldn't get away from the sliding action needed to install the upper timing cover... or maybe they needed the surfaces to move because of thermal cycling. |
Based on the response to my earlier thread http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=120808 I felt that the jury was still out. I was hoping to get an overwhelming response in favor of a single technique and sealant.
