300E Sunroof wont close.
Hello,
This is my first post - Just bought a 1986 300E one owner car in absolutely like new condition. For the past week have been opening and closing the sunroof but never fully open - today I fully opened it and now it wont close. When I work the overhead switch I can hear the relay - when I push to open I can hear the motor trying to further open but when I push to close I hear something but the roof wont budge. When I bought the car the owner wanted to keep the manual for keepsake and I agreed so I have nothing to refer to. ---- Is there a emergency manual way to close the roof? My Saab has one so I assume mercedes must also but where is it? Sorry for the length of this post. |
Try lubing the rails with grease. If they are dry, the sunroof won't move.

Is there a manual emergency crank?
Thank you for advise - the rails are clean and like brand new chrome - the roof wont even try to close.

In the trunk on the left side is access to the sunroof motor where you can manually close the roof.
I believe it is a 17mm nut. Also I think that the tire lug nut removal tool will fit. Only use the Mercedes sunroof lube. It is expensive and is only available in large quantities. Someone has been selling film canisters for about $10. I have tried other lubes over the years and only the Mercedes stuff works well, the others for some reason don't. Haasman |

If this is accurate, that might be part of the problem, as Paul described in his post above. The rails need to be lubed with special MB lube. Also, do you have an owner's manual? It has info on how to close the roof manually via the sunroof motor as described above by Haasman. If you don't have a manual, call 800 FOR MERC and get one... |
