Need advice on diagnosis and R&R of transmission rear seal 300E

My 89 300TE is leaking ATF from the rear of the transmission. The driveshaft is spinning it up onto the undercarriage. I noticed this when recently replacing the shifter bushings. I could see a band of ATF on the undercarriage above where the driveshaft meets the tranny.

How do I confirm the source of the leak is the rear tranny seal, and what is involved in replacing it?

Thanks,
Robert

Does anyone know how to get the service manual for the tranny? My CDs have nothing on the tranny.

Thanks,
Robert

If the oil is spraying the under carriage, above the transmissions drive shaft flange/ rear seal; it’s the rear seal.

Remove the cross member and check for any washer or shims, note there location.
Make a reference mark from the flange to the tail of the transmission and from the flex disc to the flange. Unbolt the flex disc and drive shaft center support then move the drive shaft to the side. You well need a thin wall deep 30mm 12point socket or equivalent in inches to remove rear nut. Once the nut is remove just pull the flange off. There’s a shin
Between the flange the rear bearing, do not loose it. Change the seal and put it all back together. Torque the nut to 89 ft. lbs.

C32AMG:
Thanks a ton for the information. I'll give this a try over the weekend.

Is there any decent source of documentation for transmission service and repair? The CDs have nothing on the tranny, not even the gear selector.

Thank again,
Robert
