Engine blow by fixed !?
Greeting Forum Members,
A few weeks ago I posted a thread about a severe blow by problem that I was having with my 1985 280sl, 187,000 miles. At its worst I was adding a quart of oil every 100 miles and the tail pipe soot was oily. I guessed that the oil loss was due to bad rings and or valve seals, no blue exhaust smoke. I purchased the car a year ago and at that time did an oil and filter change. I've driven the car approximately 3,000 miles in the past year. Figuring an inevitable valve job soon, I decided I had nothing to loose to try the often poo pooed snake oil remedies for worn engines. So, I changed the oil(Valvoline 20-50) and filter, added a bottle of Rislone to the oil and 2 bottles of Techron to a full tank of gas then hit the road to suprise Mom. This past weekend I traveled from Boston to the Jersey Shore, round trip 600+ miles, oil loss less than 1/2 quart and no more oily tail pipe soot. Go figure, something seemed to have worked. Thoughts and comments please. Thanks, Knarf |
Don't argue with results. ;)
Just wait & see what happens down the road. It is not uncommon, especially for vehicles that have been sitting for a loooooong time, to show some pretty scary symptoms when first used. |
I've had similar results from Rislone. My understanding is that Rislone is an oil plus a strong penetrating detergent or something like that which allows the penetration and softening of the deposits causing rings to stick. Anyway it works well but slowly, which is good since you don't want to release lots of gunk to plug the oil passages. :)

Most blow by on these is from exhaust pressure getting pasts the exhaust valve seals. |
