is 200,000 miles too much??

Hi
New to forum and new to MB's so please bear with me.

I'm looking at buying a 1990 250 Diesel Turbo. Very well looked after but with 200,000 miles on the clock. I know Mercedes have a reputation for long lives and diesel maybe more than petrol.....but if anyone has good advice on whether this is a good/bad bet, I'd really appreciate the feedback.

Thanks!

There is no way to answer that question without inspecting the car. It is not uncommon for MB diesels to go 300,000 or 400,000 miles without major work. My 240D went 380,000 on the original engine.

On the other hand, there are some cars that are thrashed at 100,000 or less. It all has to do with care and condition. If indeed it has been carefully maintained, garaged and kept up, I would have no worry whatsoever with a 200,000 mile MB diesel.

Condition is everything.

Good luck,

Dave you might want to post this to the diesel forum. I don't know how many diesel heads will see it here. I don't know much about this flavor of engine but 200K could be just breaking that engine in. I have one of the old 617 inline 5's which are very rugged and I have read a lot about the 606s in the 1995-99 e class sedans. I know some engines are better than others but all have a good long life if the correct maintenance is done and a little luck.
