I know this is probably a well worn topic but could someone would point me in the right direction?

my 84 diesel is not shutting down reliably & my wife feels stupid opening up the hood to encourage it. Is this a vacuum system problem with an obvious fix or best to replace hoses all around in the engine compartment & hope it goes away. heater & door locks seem pretty normal.
