Tow /'s EGR replacement? Fuel Gage malfunctioning

Hi,
1)A mechanic told me I need to replace the EGR valve. Car stalls when first started. Within a minute of reving the motor..no problem. Do you know if their is a gas additive I can use to clean the exisitng valve she has 73,000 miles and is 1996 C280.
2)My gas gauge shows the exact amount at times and then at times it shoots down to zero. When I start it up sometimes it shows the amount and sometimes it is at zero. While I am driving, at times, it goes back to the amount that is in the tank? She ran out of gas at one point ! Hmmm... any help is always appreciated.
Thank You,
Qincelady

The gas guage is likely the fuel sender unit located in the fuel tank. It seems to be a relatively common issue for MB's (both my 86 190e and my 94 e320 have this intermitten problem) You can order one from the fast lane for about $75 and replace it yourself. On the 190 it was located just behind the trunk carpet/plastic panels on the fuel tank. I doubt the C-class is much different.

Exclamation

The C-class has a "saddle" style tank that has 2 tank sending units that are connected in series. Either one or BOTH are bad! More like $225 for parts & 1.5-2 hrs labor!

The EGR valve should not have ANY effect on cold running UNLESS it is always "stuck" open!

Many times the throttle butterfly is covered with carbon & needs cleaning & that will cause cold idle problems!

MB never recommended fuel addiatives untill 2 years ago, you can always try that way first!

Thanks Skiier, & M.B. Doc

Skiier, I will try Docs solution first. Just my luck TWO units! .

Doc, I will try the additive first. Can you please recommend one? Thank you . Someone told me to take the valve off and let it soak in Carburetor cleaner but I'd like to try the additive solution first

Blessings,
Melinda

Replace EGR... still have check engine light on :(

Hello Again,
I bought an EGR valve for my 96' C280. I asked the guy at the auto supply store if he was SURE this would fit my car. He said" if it's a 96-C280 it'll fit!
Yesterday, I removed the EGR valve. When I went to replace it I noticed that the line in/ linout were larger on the new one. That Shmuck! Thank God, I was able to take the old ones off the one I was replacing and screw them into the new one. Job done. I went to a friends shop to have hime "re-set" the engine on light and turn it OFF. The computer read out someting about "auxilary exhaust". He told me to take it for a drive and see. Half hour later the light was back on! It was late so I went home and called him. I am going back to his shop tomorrow to check it out again.
Any suggestions?
Blessings,
Melinda
