new owner, 1998 C240 90,000km? service
HEY!
I have just traded in my 1980 280E on a 1998 C240. It has a bit over 90,000km - I understand it is due for a 90,000km service, is this right, or is it a 95,000 service?? If I were to take the car to the dealer, what would this service consist of? Someone mentioned that there is some sort of change oil warning light or service light, or something like that, and that it needs to be reset at service. Is this true? Can I do it myself, or do I have to take it to the dealer? I did everything to my 280E, though the fuel injection left me stumped one time. I'd like to do as much as I can to the C240 too. Cheers. |

Kaydee, without the service history it can be hard to say.
Some of the items I have listed may have been done at the last service. I would have a good look at the air filter, if it looks fairly clean I would assume that the last service was a maintenance, so fuel filter should have been replaced as well. 1) Spark plugs- due between 90,000 and 110,000 kms 2) Check and replace air filter if necessary- due at 80,000 kms 3) Fuel filter due at 80,000 kms 4) Cabin filter 5) Front and rear brake pad and rotor inspection 6) Replace wiper inserts if required 7) Visually check eng, transmission and diff for leaks 8) Check flex couplings on tail shaft 9) Check engine drive belt for cracks/ wear 10) Check all exterior lights, cooling system and steering components 11) Change engine oil and filter 12) check front and rear suspension components 13) Brake fluid- due every two years 14) Renew coolant every three years To reset service indicator, turn ignition to number two position, press reset button on instrument cluster twice, service due should come up. Now turn ignition off, now push and hold reset button and then turn ignition back to number two position (still holding button on) and wait a few seconds. Service indicator should now be reset. Kaydee, the list is a general guide for what I would do if the car has no service history.
The air filter and fuel filter are really the only items that may have already been replaced, could you contact the previous owner and find out? If not, I would replace them for peace of mind. which market/country are you in that the car is a C240?
Contact Mercedes and get a SERVICE BOOKLET and OWNERS MANUAL. You may also contact your local dealer to see if the car had been dealer maintained and if so what work has been done. The 90K mile serivce is just a continuation of the A/B services with a likely spark plug change, and in many euro markets a euro level check of the rear axle diff. If you do the work yourself the U.K edition Haynes manual 3511 is a good purchase. |

Kaydee, in the USA the A and B Services are at 15,000 mile intervals for that vintage MB. If you're dealing in kilometers I'd expect the intervals to be 25,000 km. Most folks prefer to change oil every 7,500 miles or less even though the newer MB cars rely on the FSS ... computer informing the driver when service is due.
I agree with Ethan ... contact your local MB dealer and acquire a Service Booklet and Owner's Manual for applicable to your C240.

Kayde, here is the factory service sheet from mercedes that covers your car, it outlines the service items that they perform at each interval. it can be printed for reference.

I personally use and recommend Mobil 1, for your car I would use 15w/50
It's a bit more expensive than dino oil, but well worth it. ozzy |
