A/C Question

Hi everyone. I'm new on this forum. I have a 1986 560 SEL that I love very much, except the A/C is not working. A friend of mine, who also owns a 560SEL, tried a few things last weekend: he checked the freon level--it was low and he added R134, he made sure it didn't have any leaks and he made the compressor come on (jumped terminals on a relay, maybe?). However, no A/C. Then, he noticed the fan was not coming on. (Is this called the auxillary fan?) He did something to make the fan work and then the A/C blew cold, but stopped blowing cold as soon as the fan was shut off. So, could this be a relay or the fan switch or something else? He checked some fuses and said they were fine. I would appreciate any advice and thanks in advance.

Your '86 came with R-12 refrigerant. If your friend added 134, then I would assume the system has indeed been converted to 134.

Take a look at the thread below and review posts by Arthur Dalton. There's a bit of overlap between what you've reported and what Arthur had to say, but he does emphasize some important points that might help you get this taken care of. Don't be concerned that the car in this thread is not identical to yours.

which fan?

when you say the 'fan came on and it blew cold' , do you mean the auxiliary cooling fan at front of car or the blower that pushes the air into the cabin?
