odometer reading, new cluster
If I buy a new cluster for my car, will the car's on-board computer set the correct miles on the cluster's odometer? Mine has some LED or LCQ issues, so the mileage can't be read properly. I just want to have the true mileage be readable, not scam anyone by showing fewer miles.

It will have to be programmed and the mileage coded.

Thanks Steve,
Can it be done with the generic OBDII computer, or dealer only (local dealer here wanted $119 to read a CEL code---and that was after they had me come in for a campaign that didn't include my car, wasting my morning!)? |
You need a Star Diagnostics unit that not many independant shops have. First they download the mileage from your bad cluster, remove that cluster from the dash, install the new cluster and then upload the mileage into the new cluster. Had it done to an S-class recently. The dealer charged me over $200 for the labor and I supplied a new cluster I got on Ebay.

thanks for the reply atikovi; I missed out on the ebay cluster (I never pay close enough attention to those things, and for $101 shipped it was probably a steal). I'm curious about your experience: why did you change your cluster? what did you pay for the ebay cluster? how did it all pan out, after the $200 dealer swap-out?
thanks, eddieo |
