500sl speedo reads way too fast

I have a 95 500sl. the speedo reads much faster than i am actually going, about 40 to 50 mph faster. there is no jumping or variation. is there a sensor that can be cleaned? My mechanic wanted to replace the whole cluster to the tune of $700.00 I thought i would try you guys first. Thanks alot
Nick

bit more info would help.

have you just bought the car? did it just start happening? have you changed the tyres? is it over reading the same throughout the speed range or is it variable?

Could you have a metric speedometer?

Glueing numbers to the face would be a better solution than spending $700.
This could be done discreetly and neatly.

Thanks for your response! Yes I just purchased the car. It has been that way since I purchased it. It is consistant no jumping or variations. I'm baffeled. My mechanic says it's the speedo, an electrical problem. If so I'll bite the bullet but I damn sure want to make sure. Thanks Nick
If it jumps straight to 50 from start and continues on upwards without increasing the difference, you can probably rule out a km/mph mismatch.

Don't know what type of speedo you have but my first thought would be to try and adjust the needle on the spindle, maybe it's out of position.

(of course, if it is out of position, I'd be curious as to how it happened and would be equally curious as to what else went on in the pod while it was moved... low mileage, one careful owner anyone?)

good luck
