It's getting hot in here, so put down the windows
I have an '83 300D and none of the four power windows will roll down. I bought this car with this problem back in April, and now since it's getting warmer the car has become an oven. Fortunately, the sunroof still works (sort of). I was directed to the "ice cube relay" behind the instrument panel in a related thread, but was unable to get any more information. Any ideas? I am on a tight budget and so must do as much on my own as I can. :sun_smile

Not sure what chassis we're talking about here but if it's anything like the 124, i'd say the window motors are shot.
Easy way to check is to pull one of the door panels off and put a voltmeter across the motor contacts, they are accessible without removing the motor on a 124 door, ymmv If you get power when you press the switch, the motor's at fault. If there's no power, check the fuses. Plenty of posts here on this subject, try a search. |
Checked the fuses and they're all okay. The previous owner told me they went just before I bought the car from him. It seems strange to me that all of the motors would have gone at the same time, and that it it's not the motors but some part that they all have in common. Some have alluded to an "ice cube relay", but I haven't gotten a good explanation of what and where it is. Some have said it's behind the instrument cluster, but I'd hate to take it apart to find that I was looking in the wrong place.

Swapped out the relay and windows work
The windows now work after changing out the relay!
