Blower Regulator/motor

I have a very common problem with 92 500 SEL: low air volume coming from air blower.

My mechanic has tentatively diagnosed as blower regulator defect. However, his shop will not replace regulator only. The blower motor has been upgraded since and the experience has been that replacing regulator often results in defect recurring in short order.

Difference in price: $225 for regulator; $850 for motor and regulator (plus labor in both cases).

Shop is very reputable.

Any suggestions? I am trying to sell the car, but cannot until I repair the air volume issue.

The blower regulator is pretty easy to replace yourself if you're handy with a screwdriver.

I agree with Sixto, the blower regulator is simple to swap out. Do it yourself. I did mines, took less than 10 minutes.

Swap out the regulator, put a little oil on the bearing as long as you are in there, and take your chances. You dont need to be a mechanic to change it!

... and if it has an air filter, change it ....it needs air to keep both motor and reg cool.

Blower Outpot Gone

Since my post, the blower stopped completely.

I checked the fuses, but they all seem OK. BTW, there is no specific marking as to the blower motor fuse per se. I checked the obvious ones, but maybe missed the right one.

I checked with a second repair shop. They too advised that you don't just swap out the regulator. The reasoning being that the blower motor causes the regulator to fail.

All the replies seem to discount that.

What am I missing here?

Nothing! Just DIY and enjoy. Mine died a four years ago, and it's pretty easy to replace.

The blower regulator (BR) relies on the frame of the blower motor to be a heatsink for the amplifier that's inside of the regulator. There s/b some "white paste" that serves as heat transfer medium to remove the heat to keep the BR 'cool'. The BR has to dissipate a lot of power at half-speed especially so there's a lot of stress on it . . . and they fail.

I found a rebuilt package including blower and resistor that sells for $225 at PG (Potomac German).
