Hard Braking - now shakes

Another car pulled out in front of me, and I had to hit the brakes very hard to avoid an accident.

Now when I brake, I feel a shaking.

I tried to isolate if it is coming from the front or rear, but I am not sure. The steering wheel does not vibrate, nor do I notice any difference in steering when I am braking - even though the shake is present.

It feels like warped rotors, and I suspect the rear rotors are warped (the previous owner had the front brakes replaced, and I checked them about a month ago and they looked fine).

When I come to a gradual stop, it feels like I am braking a little bit more - then less - then more - then less, even though I maintain steady pressure on the brake pedal. Cyclical.

Any ideas what to look at? I do as much DIY as I can.

This is a 1982 MB 240D with 186k miles.

Thanks,

- Patrick

Sounds like warped rotors. Be sure as well that your tie rods, ball joints are good as well as wheel bolts.

Don't buy cheap rotors. Be sure to always properly torque the wheel bolts.

Measure the rotor thickness...

DO they appear to have been turned? Your suppose to replace those solid rotors and not turn them. Probably a mistake by the previous brake place.

First think to check is are the lug bolts tight? Are the rotors seated properly on the hubs.

Those are cheap to replace!
