Auxiliary fan motor/is this normal

With engine off, should the a/c Aux. fan when rotated by hand spin freely for a period of time or should it turn about 6" then stop?

Are you talking about the electric aux fans or the belt driven fan? Electric aux fans should probably spin freely - belt driven fans, if at HOT temp, should have the clutch engaged, and therefore not spin freely.

This fan is about 16" in Dia. and is mounted in front of ths radiator.

If it is in front of the radiator, meaning between the radiator and the very front of the car, then it should be your electric aux. fan and it should probably spin freely when the car is off.

I have the same car... albeit a 94. I recently replaced my aux fans because they were running hit or miss... probably due to worn motor brushes.

I don't think you can just replace the motor... but with some care, you can probababy take them apart and replace the brushes.

Also, check ebay. There are quite a few aux fans for sale (new) and reduced prices. I believe they fit your car... but you'll need to verify.

Search on "mercedes fan (124,w124,e420) aux*"

What problem exactly are you having. Let me know. I'm willing to go out to my car and test things for you if you'd like.

I think 420 Benz has a W126 model, not a W124. However, Ebay has plenty of parts for both models.

I doubt that you can just buy the motor. Check out the store at the top of the page, FASTLANE, they may have the part you're looking for.

Troy,

You are right. I was looking at your model (tag line) when I replied. :-)
