Where to buy, 1988 560SL Lug Bolts

Gentelmen

Does anyone know where I can find the old style (with plastic caps) extended lug bolts for a 1988 560SL. I prefer an NOS source. I talked to Phil at FastLane the ones they have are aftermarket and not exactly the same. I could also get away with just the plastic caps as long as they are not chrome.

John, the MBUSA Classic Center is due to open in Irvine, CA soon ... no contact info available yet, but Tom Hanson (an MBCA member) who was formerly at Caliber Motors is heading up this new MB venture. Tom is an extremely knowledgeable MB parts guy and if he doesn't know it's likely no one knows. I'll pass along contact info when/if I come across it.

John, I've got a complete used set of 20 from a 1987 300E (W124) with the small dull aluminum color cap on each. If you have specs on what you need ("extended") I can compare, or just the caps. Cost would be $15 plus USPS or UPS either way.

Here's a pretty good site for lugs - should have what you need at much better than dealer prices:

I have a 1987 190 16v with EvoII titanium wheels. I have been looking with no luck for bolts in either black or titanium. Anyone seen some?

Why would you want the extended lug bolts???????

They discontinued them b/c they would shear off in the double/head area.

The W124 bolts are different.

They look like the attached picture. Where and how exactly were they breaking.

Between the seating part and the head!!

They are suppose to be nasty buggers to remove once the head snaps off!

Throw all of these away and get the new OE mercedes.

I can imagine that being a real pain to remove. It sounds like people have been having too many tires installed with full power impact wrenches. Unfortunatly these bolts are no longer available from MB. They do have some that are shorter and will work but they look stupid.

No kidding. I found three that the air gun wouldn't budge. I got lucky using PB Blaster and a breaker bar on one, but the other two were a total PITA once the hex broke off.

I then removed every lug bolt, applied Never-Seize, and installed at 80 ft. lbs. by hand. I've already ordered a replacement set, and will retire the originals before anything else bad happens with them.

John, here are the measurements of those I have. Mine are stock for the W201 and W124 chassis. They have a M12 x 1.5 thread size and the length of the shank/threaded portion below the cone is 40 mm. the length above the cone is 10.5 mm. and take a 17 mm. lug wrench. Those for chassis W107 (your 560SL with extended shank as picture in previous post) have a length above the cone of 43.5 mm. Otherwise they are identical. I would guess that the only difference is that you would be carrying a deep socket. If you want only the dull aluminum caps, they are all there, but some do show slight marks (not at all bad for 20 years old). Let me know.
