Can't Get It Up!!

my rear window that is(w 140)! ;)
took off panel(right rear) and wasn't sure if it was motor , regulator or plastic piece.i took the motor off the regulator and it worked most of the time-there were times when i would push the button and it wouldn't move.if i turned the key off and tapped the motor and then pressed the switch it would seem to work in either direction but would stop SOMETIMES if i hit the express-up button. i should add that all this happens when i have the motor OFF the regulator.when i inserted the gear into the regulator it wouldn't budge.
with the motor out i cannot raise the window.does any of this make sense to someone?if my regulator is the problem, how do i check it? is there someway that i can raise the window until i get the neccesary parts?

just took motor out again.after reading that it might have to be reset , iwent about cycling it 'til it timed out.did this 4 or 5 times.i could hear the motor turn on but it didn't move any noticable amount.took motor out and it cycles up and down at will! this leads me to believe that it is either the regulator or the brittle plastic piece. murphy's law being what it is , makes me think it'll be the harder repair ie.regulator.
i've read that i'll need rivets as well.does anybody have an r&r for this?i'll try to search as well.
thanks for any advice

thanks carson

the instructions call for a 4.8 mm drill bit.what is the closest imperial to that?it works out to ~0.1894764 inches.is that about 13/64 inch bit?

regulator replacement

I just replaced a rear window regulator on my '95 S320 lwb. You need about a 3/16 drill bit to drill of the pop rivet heads (the size is not crucial).. the original regulator uses a plastic slide that both ends of the cable hook into, the plastic breaks (duh) and the cable end pops out and jams the window (usually down) the replacements regulator ($218 canadian) has a metal slide...so someone realised the error of their ways...good luck it took me about an hour and a half to re and re.

thanks sw! i went with the bit that just made the rivets spin and went a little sideways to remove the rest of the rivet.this made my rivets stay tight going in. i was advised to use nuts and bolts but decided against it when i realized it was going to be tough to get to those top two holes!i was so eager to get the rivets in that i forgot to attach the window first!i eventually got it in the slider.do you think this will cause me pain down the line?
