C-Class (2002) Air Con Problem

Good day all,

I wonder if anyone here is clued up with the air con systems.

The "EC" light was on inside the car and would not switch off, after reading the manual this means it is low on gas. I took the car to a local air con specialist who drained off the remaining gas, cleaned the system then regassed it but the light still will not go out inside the car which means that the air con unit will not run.

Does anyone know how to reset the switch so that the air con can be enabled again.

PS. Mercedes charge £160 to regas a system whereas the local specialist charges £50! It is just that he is unaware how to reset the light.

PLEASE HELP ASAP.. IT IS VERY HOT HERE AT THE MOMENT! :)

Thank you,
Mike.

Your system probably has a fault to it. If you have the fancy AC there are actual values on the display. If you don't have a display, you will have to see someone with a diagnostic computer to talk to the control head and see what it thinks is wrong.

Could it not just be the sensor? Sounds just like the situation I had. See http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=86110

Of course it could, that is why one would look at the actual values and see who the liar is.

The service bulletin basically says to change the sensor as a first step in any case doesn't it?

BTW, thanks again for your help with my problem way back when. :)

Isn't this one still under warranty?

if it's the UK I think the warranty is only for 2 years on 2002 model cars

Hi Guys,

Here in UK the warranties are 3 years. But the car is about 2 months outside of warranty!! Always the way!

I do not have the digital climate control display, only the manual knobs & buttons. Is there any way I can push a combination of buttons to get the EC light out, even temporarily?

I have tried holding the EC button for over 30 seconds like I saw in another post but it had no effect.

Your comments are appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike.

If it was me, I'd consider the following:

1. Go to the dealer and plead with him to help you out since the car is just barely out of warranty.

2. If #1 doesn't work, then I'd change out the sensor that is typically known to cause this problem. For $32 US or so it seems like a pretty good investment. My only question is that I'm not sure if your climate control system is exactly like ours. You said that the controls are different. I would think that the set up behind the controls is liekly the same, but I'm not positive.
