1991 500SL - Soft Top not closing properly
 

Another problem with my 500SL - when I close the top it operates fine until it reaches the very front area where it latches onto the car above the windshield.

It won't secure itself until I pull (hard!) on the top, then it secures itself (locks) into place. (sorry, this is the best description I can come up with).

Any thoughts? I'm wondering where this is a '91 and came from Arizona if it just needs lubing, or, if it's somehow out of position?!

Well, it seems like you are having trouble, it should not operate that way. I would check for leaks, fluid level, and lubrication first. The fluid resevoir is located under your spare tire, check the level. Then check your latches for leaks, it is common for them to leak up there near the windshield. The lower pressure will slow it and it won't operate as effectively thus causing you to assist. It locks down with a lot of pressure, that is why it pops and makes noise like it does. If those don't produce a problem, then check the operation of your top, that something isn't bent or out of whack. Good luck!
