HELP! 560 not running right after replacing fuel distributor

My local mechanic (not MB certified) swapped out my leaking fuel distributor 2 days ago before leaving for a 2000 mile trip south. When driving below 40 MPH it runs very rough and the engine doesn't feel right. It gets better at 50, 60, 70 MPH.

I spoke with a friend who is a Porsche mechaninc, he says if the 560 is CIS it may be vacuum related, perhaps a hose came loose. Otherwise, it may be fuel-pressure related. We did the idle adjust as per MB's service manual, idle seems okay when in Park, gets rough when I put the car in Drive.

I am in Morehead City North Carolina, and leave Sunday for Raleigh and then Nashvillle. Any ideas?? Any good MB mechanics between here and Raleigh that can help me out? I don't want to put too many more miles on her in this condition.

its just a shot but I once left the main vacuum hose off on the right side of the intake manifold on mine. it ran horribly, although it it did run. if they bumped the line or if its just nbot on that might be your problem. if its on, pull it off and block off connection to see if your idle improves. if so theres a leak somewhere else down the line.

The car "fixed" itself the day I went to have it repaired!

The mechanic thinks that I may have had a plugged injector (I bought the fuel distributor used, may have been gummed up with some old fuel) and the constant pressure frm new fuel through the lines cleaned it out.

SO now it runs right at all RPMs, but the highway gas mileage has slipped from 18-19 MP to 15-16 MPG.
